Best free tool for agentic workflows: NextRetro. It is the only dedicated retrospective product we could verify that ships a first-party MCP server and includes that access on a non-expiring free plan.
TeamRetro’s MCP server is real and broader. It is not free. Kollabe’s MCP server is real. Free-plan orgs cannot connect.
What “agentic” means for a retro
An agentic retro is not a chatbot that writes icebreakers. It is a loop the assistant can finish:
- Create a board from a template and return a shareable URL.
- Collect cards during the meeting, or seed them from PRs, incidents, or last sprint’s notes.
- Read votes, themes, and open actions after people have spoken.
- Write one owned action, then check it next sprint.
If any step requires exporting a PDF and pasting it into chat, the workflow is not agentic. It is admin work.
NextRetro exposes that loop at https://www.nextretro.io/api/mcp. The public skill lists list_boards, get_board, summarize_board, list_action_items, list_board_types, create_board, add_card, create_action_item, and update_action_item_status. Claude, Cursor, Windsurf, VS Code, and any Streamable HTTP client can attach. Card authors and voter identities are omitted from MCP responses.
How we scored 2027
The 2026 article used five practical tests: participant friction, independent thinking, facilitation, continuity, and the actual free-plan limit. Those still apply. We added a sixth.
- Participant friction: Can someone join from a link without an account?
- Independent thinking: Private or anonymous writing before the reveal?
- Facilitation: Group, vote, discuss, leave with actions?
- Continuity: Can you recover last month’s decision?
- The actual limit: Boards, people, meetings, history, privacy, or facilitation?
- Agent path: Is there a first-party MCP server on the permanent free plan, with documented read and write tools?
Unofficial community connectors do not count. A vendor AI sidebar that cannot leave the product does not count. MCP on a paid plan does not count as free.
1. NextRetro: best free retro for agentic teams
NextRetro is a purpose-built retrospective: collect, group, vote, discuss, act. Participants join from a link. The free plan includes unlimited boards and participants, real-time collaboration, voting, comments, anonymous mode, templates, recent history, and PDF or Markdown export.
The homepage states: “Free forever for teams. MCP access included.” The setup skill documents the Streamable HTTP endpoint and scoped API keys. Pro ($20 / month flat) adds workspaces, full history, and create-next-board. It does not unlock MCP. That is the 2027 difference.
Where it wins
- A facilitator wants the first board live in under a minute, with no participant signup.
- An engineer already in Cursor or Claude wants to say “create a Start-Stop-Continue for Sprint 24 and give me the link.”
- After the call, the same assistant can summarize top-voted themes and file action items.
- You will not hit a 10-person or 10-meeting free cap.
The trade-off
NextRetro is not a general whiteboard and not a full agile suite. Planning poker and standups are not the product. Cross-team health analytics are not the product. Long-term workspace memory is Pro.
Try the agent path
Start a free NextRetro board. Then add

2. Kollabe: strongest no-signup board if you do not need agents yet
Kollabe’s own July 2026 comparison describes a permanent free plan with unlimited retros, up to 10 participants, no account required to host or join, and a 7-day history window. That is a real free board.
Kollabe also ships a native MCP server. Its own setup guide (checked September 23, 2026) is explicit: you need a paid or trial organization; “free-plan orgs and orgs that haven’t enabled MCP are greyed out”; “The server is included on every paid plan, including the free trial. Free-tier accounts can’t connect.”
So Kollabe is a strong human free plan and a paid agent plan. Do not file it as a free MCP retro.
Best fit: a small team that wants a lively no-signup board and can live with a 7-day archive, or will pay $29 / month per team when they want the assistant.
3. Parabol: best free suite of agile meetings
Parabol’s Starter plan (checked September 23, 2026) is free for up to 2 teams, 10 meetings per month, unlimited users, 30 days of history, and AI discussion prompts. Team costs $8 per active user per month.
Ten meetings cover one team’s retros plus some poker. It does not cover three squads sharing one workspace. Parabol is open source and stronger when you want several meeting types in one product. See NextRetro vs Parabol.
We did not find a first-party Parabol MCP server on the official site. Third-party hosted connectors exist. They are not a vendor-supported free agent path.
Best fit: a small group that wants retros, standups, and sprint poker without introducing a second tool.
4. Neatro: best guided free retro for one small team
Neatro’s free plan (checked September 23, 2026) covers one team of up to 10 members, unlimited retrospectives and radars, 70+ templates, basic facilitation, and 30 days of history. Guests can join without an account.
That is still one of the cleaner human-facilitated free tiers. We found no public Neatro MCP server. If the 2027 requirement is “ask Claude what we promised last month,” Neatro is not the answer unless you export first.
Best fit: one stable team of 10 or fewer that wants prompts and structure more than agents.
5. Miro: MCP exists, the free retro does not
Miro has an official MCP story for reading and writing boards. It remains a general canvas. The free plan still centers on three editable boards. Voting and the timer are paid on Free, which is the same constraint we recorded in 2026.
You can run a retro on sticky notes. The facilitator builds the workflow. An agent on a Miro board can draft shapes. It does not give you NextRetro’s collect → vote → action sequence. See NextRetro vs Miro.
Best fit: teams already paying the Miro switching cost for workshops, not teams choosing a retro tool from scratch.
6. EasyRetro: occasional public boards
EasyRetro is the familiar columns-and-cards board. Our September 11, 2026 pricing check listed one public board per month on Free, unlimited participants, and paid AI summaries. We could not re-render the JavaScript pricing page on September 23, so treat that row as last verified September 11.
A one-board monthly cap does not cover a two-week sprint cadence. There is no public EasyRetro MCP server.
Best fit: a one-off public retro, not a year of agent-assisted ceremonies.

Do the 2026 participant test, then add the assistant.
- Create a board from a template.
- Open the participant link in a private window. Add three cards. Vote.
- Connect the vendor’s official MCP server, or record that none exists on free.
- Ask the assistant to summarize the board and name the top-voted theme.
- Ask it to create one action with an owner.
- Ask it next week whether that action is still open.
